Very popular today, brass is a beautiful and unique blend of copper and zinc.  The soft yellow color is resistant to many elements and is a lovely decorative accent.  Brass has been around for literally hundreds of years and is widely implemented across many of today’s industries.  There are many different types of brass which are proof to the versatile nature of one of man’s more beautiful alloys.

Brass was made by melting copper with calamine back in ancient times.  Calamine is a zinc ore and was discovered in a calamine ore mine in the village of Breinigerberg.  Zinc is removed from the calamine and mixed with copper when it is in the process of being melted down.

In addition to the decorative home accents such as mirrors, faucets and other plumbing fixtures, brass has a wide range of versatility.  Brass is used extensively in musical instruments, locks, valves and ammunition.  Brass is very resistant to tarnishing which makes is highly valued and in demand.

There are quite a few different types of brass available which many people are unaware of.  Gilding metal is a very soft brass and is used primarily in ammunition.  Low brass is pale gold in color and is generally used for flexible metal hosing.  Leaded brass is a mixture of copper, zinc and lead and has been given high marks for machinability while rich low brass has a high copper content and is used for jewelry.
